Artist Statement

It all started when...

I dream, I connect. An intention I have set in the unconscious mind to drive the expression of art through the unearthing, unweaving and constant inquiry to the miracle of humanity. I believe the human experience is a whole, perfect and complete entity all on its own, desiring to be questioned and communicated. I am excited by collaboration and the art of dance to evoke, empower and entice.

I am inspired by the emotional landscape of what it means to thrive and survive in a world that is calling us to be seen, heard and understood. I believe art and the stimulus of music and movement can awaken the senses and open a portal to humanity in such a way that our reality can in fact be that of a dream. My work is influenced by the theatrical and guided by the humility that permeates the human spirit. It is through this dichotomy and symbiotic energy that I am motivated to create an experience for the performer and viewer alike. As I lean into intense physical expression, I create a massive canvas for unleashing matters of the heart, mind and soul.  I am interested in the explosive power of the human body juxtaposed with nuance and realness.

I believe in classicism as a point of departure and I am influenced by the abstract in order to depict story. I am influenced by the richness of history as well as the promise of tomorrow. I find pleasure in primal instinct and refined technique as a viable language to effectively communicate the parts of us that are “me” and the parts of us that are “we.”

My desire as an artist is to illicit and make space for the possibility of change. I value whole hearted challenge as means for growth for audience member and artist. I believe in the search for courage, and through physical expression yearn to create moments that are open, electric, spiritual, joyful and free.

Every piece is a new experience and a new birth on its’ own. I use movement to color, texture, describe and explore music. I am guided by the subtext of the music to structure the unveiling of this exploration. I am interested in landscape and lighting to feed the architecture within any given creation. I am interested in the dancer as explorer as I navigate the map. In the words of poet Francois Rabelais, “I go to seek a Great Perhaps.”
